SMOMS Story:

Our practice was founded by Dr. Donald Gove in 1972, with the objective of providing comprehensive oral and maxillofacial care to the people of the southern Maine area. In 1989 we became Southern Maine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, P.A. Since that time we have grown into the largest oral and maxillofacial practice in the state of Maine. We have three locations to offer you maximum convenience while providing the finest quality care in a pleasant and comfortable environment.

SMOMS Surgeons:

Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires additional years of hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, the doctors of SMOMS manage a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth, and facial regions. Drs. Doss, Crawford, Mitchell and Traub practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with expertise ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to corrective jaw surgery. This also includes techniques designed to rebuild bone structure with minimal surgical intervention and optimal patient comfort. Our office can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.

SMOMS Surgical Staff:

We are very proud to have exceptional surgical assistants as members of our team.  All assistants and team members have received CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level, in compliance with the American Heart Association.  Our parent organization, The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, offers certification for surgical assistants through their Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination. All of our assistants are required to pursue such certifications as we feel it will optimize patient safety.  This course is proctored by one of our board certified surgeons to provide increased depth of knowledge for our surgical team. In addition, some of our clinicians are Certified Surgical Assistants, meaning they can accompany our surgeons to the Operating Rooms of Mercy Hospital in Portland and Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

Each of our offices has a hierarchical structure to ensure each facility operates smoothly each day. All three locations have complete capability to provide the full range of services provided by our practice.

Monthly in-service meetings with the staff further develop areas of patient care such as empathy, efficiency and safety.
